Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 14:
"Fanfare for Brass and Percussion"
(2022)
This instrumentation for "Fanfare for Brass and Percussion" is intentionally the same as the performing ensemble for "Fanfare for the Common Man" by Aaron Copland, except the 1st Trumpet also doubles on Piccolo Trumpet. The music in this fanfare has undergone more revisions and versions than any other title in my catalog.
It started out its life as a piece for mixed chorus and piano in the early 1980s, then as a work for strings and piano and, never really happy with it, finally into its present form as a fanfare in 2022. It times in a half the duration of its predecessor versions, and is much more effective, featuring much in the way of newly composed idiomatic brass and percussion writing added to the preexisting source music.
