Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 18:

“Nocturne for Nine Players” 

(1992; 16 Minutes)


I composed “Nocturne for Nine Players” for my PhD dissertation composition during 19911992 with Yehudi Wyner as my advisor. This work features lyrical melodic writing combined with a chromatic musical language. The nine players required to perform this piece are as follows.

  • 2 Flutes with the 2nd Flute doubling on Alto Flute

  • Oboe doubling on English Horn

  • B-flat Clarinet doubling on B-flat Bass Clarinet

  • Bassoon

  • 2 F Horns

  • Harp

  • Percussion, 1 player (Bass Drum, 3 Suspended Cymbals [low, medium, high], Glockenspiel, Snare Drum, Vibraphone)

  The Brandeis University Contemporary Music Ensemble gave the world premiere performance of Nocturne for Nine Players” in Slosberg Recital Hall on December 6, 1992. The performers were Christine Fish [Moulton], Flute, Suellen Hershman, Flute, Kathy Halvorson, Oboe, Katherine Matasy, Clarinet, Gregory Newton, Bassoon, Robert Marlatt, Horn, Jean Rife, Horn, Ruth Emanuel Maffa, Harp, Michael Parola, Percussion, Adam Grossman, Guest Conductor. Subsequent performances of “Nocturne for Nine Players” include one by the University of Missouri-Columbia Contemporary Music Ensemble New Music Festival from April 1, 1995.
