Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 19:
"A Lovely Summer Night"
for
Tenor Saxophone and Piano (2000)
or
French Horn and Piano (2009)
or
Tenor Voice and Piano (2000)
"A Lovely Summer Night" exists in three versions for three reasons. I originally wrote it as a challenging song for tenor voice and piano, but the text by Antonio Machado (1875–1939) was not in the public domain until much later on, so I kept the existence of that version private, and did not release it to the public until 2022.
In the meantime, I did not want the music lying around for decades doing nothing so, as is the case with many of my titles, I created two instrumental versions of "A Lovely Summer Night": one for tenor saxophone and piano for saxophonist Kenneth Radnofsky in 2000, and one for French horn and piano for a former friend of mine who is a hornist in 2009.
"A Lovely Summer Night" sounds like no other piece in my catalog; I truly love this miniature. It is based on a tone row that is the same all-interval set used by Luigi Dallapiccola in his 1954 masterpiece and one of my favorite orchestral miniatures, "Piccola Musica Notturna", hence the inspiration for the music. That all-interval set imbues the music with inherently unique melodies and harmonies.
