Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 24:
"Calling for Harmony"
for
Horn Quartet
(2021, 5 minutes)
I composed "Calling for Harmony" for a call for scores of the same name by the horn quartet called Quadre. I really like the name of the call for scores.
To me, not only does "Calling for Harmony" for stand for music, it also stands as a clarion call for political liberals and conservatives everywhere to stop demonizing one another, to treat each other respectfully, to talk to each other, to arrive at mutually agreeable compromises on all issues possible, and to regain the middleground, as was the case when I was growing up. Only then can meaningful progress be achieved on any issue.
Anyone who has done a deep dive into my catalog of works knows that the melody for "Calling for Harmony" comes from an eight-second piece I composed called "Backwards Decade" for another call for scores by the Vine Orchestra for pieces lasting only eight seconds! I really like that melody, so I extrapolated upon it in "Calling for Harmony".
