Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 36:
"The Wolf and the Goat"
for
Flute and Marimba
(2015)
"The Wolf and the Goat" was composed for a call for scores for flute and marimba by Nicole Riner and Jennie Dorris for the Fifteen Minutes of Fame Series/Composer's Voice/Vox Novus/Robert Voisey. The suggested theme was literature expressed in music, so I chose the following fable.
"Once a wolf saw a goat atop a hill and said, 'Come down here, Miss Goat! The grass here is greener and longer.' 'Thank you,” answered the goat, 'the grass down there may be much better. But, if I come down you will get a good meal. So, I prefer to stay here where you can’t reach. At least I am quite safe.'”
The moral of the story is to not let others exploit your gentleness and tolerance. This fable is a cautionary tale for our times, and I leave it to you and your intellect to figure out its broader implications.
