Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 39:
"Three Artistic Styles"
for
B-flat Trumpet and Piano
(2021)
1. Pointillism 2. Expressionism 3. Romanticism
Composed for a 2022 call for scores by the McMurry University New Music Project, I got the idea for "Three Artistic Styles" from my association with a very close old friend of mine, fine artist Malcolm Tuffnell of Santa Barbara, California. He and I have discussed the visual and musical arts and how they intersect many times over the years and, in so doing, have taught one another a great deal about each other's craft.
If you are unfamiliar with Malcolm's artwork, you can visit his professional Facebook page for more information. https://www.facebook.com/MalcolmTuffnellArtStudio
The three artistic styles I explore in my composition are Pointillism, Expressionism, and Romanticism, with each one comprising one of three movements. The various incarnations of the twelve tone row I employ throughout is the constant that ties the movements together. Otherwise, the musical motifs featured in each movement are unique to each one.
I worried just a bit less about motivic cohesion in this piece than I ordinarily do because my conception of this piece involves painting three drastically contrasting artistic styles through music. Therefore, I feature a curtain call cadenza near the end of the work that features motifs from the first and second movements to help tie the three movements together.
