Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 41:
"Variant on 'Battle Cry of Freedom'"
for
Wind Quintet (2012)
"Variant on 'Battle Cry of Freedom'" received its world premiere performance by the West Point Wind Quintet as part of the Vox Novus/Composer's Voice "15 Minutes of Fame" Concert Series on April 29, 2012, in Jan Hus Church in New York City. The concert featured contrabass clarinetist Alex Sramek and the West Point Wind Quintet with 15 one-minute selections composed on the subject of the American Civil War to commemorate its Sesquicentennial. I chose the tune “Battle Cry of Freedom” by George Root as the basis for
this composition because, not only is it of the Civil War era, but it is also
included in the song “They Are There” by Charles Ives, to whom I pay
homage with an alternative ending.
A video of the West Point Wind Quintet's performance of "Variant on 'Battle Cry of Freedom'" appears with this posting. I do not recall why it is blurry, but the sound quality is good.
