Program Note
Completed in 1999, Psalm 130 was composed expressly for the ECS Publishing Psalm Songs series. It was written with ease of performance in mind. The piece is in a simple A-B-A form and there is no divisi writing.
My translation was accomplished by translating the original Hebrew into English, then comparing my results with many other translations. If my translation resembled any of them too closely, I found the closest, most expressive synonyms for the words that appeared most frequently in the other versions.
Through the music I intend to express both the urgency and the hope of the text.

From the depths I have called out to you, Holy One,
Lord, hear my voice;
let your ears be mindful of the voice of my implorations.
If you, God, were to consider our wrongdoings
Lord, who would stand?
Because forgiveness is with you, so that you may be revered.
I hope for the Holy One, my soul hopes;
and for Gods words I hope.
My soul awaits the Lord more than sentries await the morning.
Place your hope in the Holy One,
for with the Holy One there is benevolence
and with God is much redemption.
And God will redeem you from all your wrongdoings.
