"In Memoriam" for Flute, Viola and Double Bass (2011)

"In Memoriam"

for

Flute, Viola and Double Bass

(2011)

The year of composition for "In Memoriam" cited above is not entirely accurate. In 2001, I began sketching a string orchestra piece titled "Elegiac Rondo", an intense, complex, seven-minute elegy to both my father and the victims of 9/11/01 that I did not complete until 2018. "Elegiac Rondo" remains one of the most significant unperformed compositions in my catalog of works.

Not knowing if or when I would complete "Elegiac Rondo", in 2011 I spotted a call for one-minute scores by the Bateira Trio for flute, viola and double bass. I decided to arrange the beginning of that piece for the trio so that, at least, the beginning of the piece would be "out there" if they chose it for performance, as it ends effectively on the twelve-tone tonality equivalent of a half cadence.

"In Memoriam" was not chosen for performance by the trio, but this title remains a effective miniature that would be an meaningful addition to any college/university music school concert or recital.
