Instrumental Solo Composition of the Day, Installment 1:
"A Song Without Words"
Horn Solo
1994
ECS Publishing Group Catalog Number 6434
"A Song Without Words" is actually a predecessor to my choral work, "A Song" for mixed chorus and flute. I had the melody and lyrics in my head in 1994, but I did not hear the harmonies for it until 2004. In the meantime, I realized what a nice melody it made for solo horn in F, so I engraved a score, and shared it with horn players and teachers.
Horn teacher Paul Basler, who taught at the University of Florida, sent me an email me on 13 November 1995 writing, "My horn student performed your piece very very well last week - excellent interpretation ...very effective. Congrats on such a lovely work - the audience (around 200) really enjoyed it."
ECS Publishing Group published "A Song Without Words" for horn in 2004, and "A Song" for mixed chorus and flute in 2005. I hope you enjoy "A Song Without Words."
