Orchestral Arrangement of the Day, Installment 15:

"Gymnopédie No. 1"

(Erik Satie, 1888 [Piano])

Arranged for Oboe and String Orchestra

(2011)

You know the saying, "Keep it simple, stupid!" Well, that's precisely what I set out to do with my arrangement of Erik Satie's best known composition: I kept my arrangement as simple as I possibly could. As much as I adore Claude Debussy's 1987 orchestral arrangement of this piano piece—and I truly do, imho, the triplets he added to the harp part for example, harm the elegant simplicity of Satie's music.

Happily, my arrangement of "Gymnopédie No. 1" is published by my primary publisher and past employer of 23 years, ECS Publishing Group, under the Catalog Numbers 7.068284. Follow the next URL to view a partial PDF of the score, and for ordering information.

I hope you enjoy "Gymnopédie No. 1" . Thank you for your time and attention.
